religions america

Ares is one among the Greek gods. He is Zeus' first son. His parents and other gods don't particularly like him, but Aphrodite is his constant lover. The god is often associated to violence in all its ugly forms and with war. He is associated with violence, blood, indiscriminate killing and the destruction or life.

Ares was a war god

Ares was the war God of ancient Greece. He was the embodiment of the most brutal and barbaric aspects of war and was also the brother to Athena who represented the honorable, benevolent parts of war. While Ares was believed to be the god and protector of war, the Greeks believed Ares could also assist individuals in their personal struggles.

He loved Aphrodite.

Zeus and Hera both had a son, the god Ares. He was associated with death, war, and boundaries. He also loved women. A Greek myth describes a secret love story between Ares (the Greek god) and Aphrodite (the Greek goddess). However, Ares was not a very popular god in the ancient Greek myths. Hephaestus was actually a contemptuous god who often treated Ares as a traitor.

He was a bloodthirsty, ferocious warrior

Ares, the god war, was a bloodthirsty maniac who thrived on destruction. His worship was revered by the Greeks from around 1200 BC. His people were fearsome and he was born in Thrace. Ares' bloodthirsty nature made him a difficult god to worship and led to many defeats in battle. He was also often put in a pot by giants and was often a victim of Athena’s vengeance.

He was a symbol for indiscriminate murder

Ares was the Greek god for war. He was depicted as the man who pierces a shield and sacks a city in mythology. He represented the most violent side of battle, and was opposite to Athena, who represents a more strategic method of war. Ares was a powerful god. He was often pictured alongside his brothers Phobos (and Deimos) and with his sister Eris. His symbols are a knife and a spear. He is also associated as a boar, bird, and carcass.

Athena defeated him

Athena and Ares battled and fell on each other, a wide sea thundering in the background. The earth quaked beneath their immortal feet. Their battle-cries could be heard across the vast sky, all the way to Hades' abyss and into the dark depths. Both gods und men cried in pain.

Spartan warriors loved him.

Spartan life revolved around the great Spartan army. As young as seven years old, boys left their homes to start military training. There was no other vocation or education for them. The Spartans worshiped the god Ares, who represented the values of Sparta. They built a statue to the god in chains within the city.
