Religion in Ancient Egypt

religions list

Ancient Egypt was a country rich in religious traditions. Its temples contained chapels shaped like the ear that allowed people to whisper prayers into the gods. The country also had countless small local shrines where people could make sacrifices and offerings to the gods. Egyptians weren’t like other cultures.

Theology of Gods

Ancient Egypt had complex and diverse theology regarding the gods. Egyptians gave creation to gods like Atum and Khnum. They also tried to explain it through metaphors. Even though they could not come up with a single idea of God, evidence points to a transcendent God.

A particular territory or land was often associated with the gods. Ra was the sun god, while Osiris was the god for the dead. The gods also ruled the skies and the earth. The sun god was seen as the ruler of both dead and living.

Relationship between the kings of the gods

The relationship between the King and the Gods in ancient Egypt was complicated. The first millennium BCE saw the god Osiris becoming the dominant deity in many contexts, while solar worship was largely on the decline. The relationship between the king Amun and Osiris changed during this period.

The New Kingdom saw a triad as the most popular grouping of gods in temples. Each triad consisted of an elder god and a youthful god. These triads were often formed for form, and their names often reflected the king's title or status. Kawm Umbu temple's triad includes Haroeris ("elder Horus") Tsenetnofret ("perfect friend") and Pnebtawy (the Lord of Two Lands).
